Paris 2024: Leveraging existing venues for the upcoming Summer Olympics

Where we are in the world

The Summer Olympics is held every four years – in 2024, Paris will be the host city. After a selection process held in 2017, only Paris and Los Angeles were remaining contenders after other city bids withdrew their names from the selection process. Paris was selected to host the 2024 event while LA was chosen for 2028. In preparation for the event, the Paris 2024 team has been selecting venue locations for the 32 sports.

Three key facts about this map

Most venues selected for Paris 2024 already exist or will be temporary

According to organizers, there will be very little new construction for the Olympic Games in Paris – about 95% of the venues either already exist or will be temporary structures that can be dismantled after the games are completed.

Examples of existing infrastructure used are:

  • Parc des Princes where the professional soccer team PSG plays, along with all other soccer stadiums throughout the country (in cities like Lyon, Bordeaux and Lille)
  • Rolland Garros where the French Open tennis tournament takes place every year in May

An example of temporary structures are sporting sites in iconic Paris locations, such as:

  • A temporary beach volleyball stadium built at the base of the Eiffel Tower in Champ-de-Mars Park
  • A temporary equestrian stadium at the iconic Palace of Versailles

There will be only 3 net new permanent structures built for Paris 2024

Outside of the 95% existing or temporary structures, there will be only 4 permanent, net-new structures built for this Olympic Games:

  1. Olympic Village in Saint-Denis
  2. Porte de la Chapelle Arena, which will host badminton & rhythmic gymnastics
  3. Paris La Défense Arena, which will host swimming & water polo
  4. North Paris Arena (announced in July 2022), which will host boxing & some modern pentathlon events

This Olympic Games will feature the surfing event in a location 9,800+ miles away from Paris

As part of the games, the surfing event (new to the Olympics in Tokyo 2020) will not be held in Europe but rather more than 15,000km / 9,800+ miles away from Paris in the French overseas territory of Tahiti . While technically still France, this is the furthest event away from a host city ever – previously, this obscure record was held by the Stockholm, Sweden 1956 games where the equestrian events were required to be held in Melbourne, Australia (~9,700 miles in distance) due to animal quarantine regulations.
